The Iowa
Chiropractic Patient Association (ICPA) is a reality. The
association is aimed at people who are already chiropractic
patients. The idea is to provide people who already know the value
of chiropractic with solid information that will enable them to take
their health to that next level, through chiropractic.
For example, a patient who has been successfully treated for low
back pain, may not be aware of the success chiropractic has with the
treatment of migraine headaches. Good, solid, science based
information might help him/her to learn of these procedures and
incorporate them into their health regime, or that of their family
and friends
For this information, we turned to the Foundation for Chiropractic
Education and Research (FCER). They have a bi-monthly publication,
Healthways, which is written for lay people and will do exactly what
we want it to do. Current plans call for FCER to maintain a mailing
list of all ICPA members and to mail out Healthways.
Another benefit of membership will be information about legislative
and regulatory issues which may impact the patient. This will be
primarily during the legislative sessions, but will also be
available throughout the year on an "as needed" basis. Specific
information on important issues and instructions as to how to
contact legislators, will be made available to the member when
appropriate.
How can your patients become members?
It's easy. We have included an
application form at the top of this page for your use. Make as many photo copies as you need
and provide a copy to those patients you feel might be interested in
such information. We are asking that doctors submit the members'
dues which are $5 per year.
When you have collected your applications, send them along with a
check for the dues to the ICS and we will take care of the rest. As
you see your patients through the coming year, you will be able to
see first hand just how valuable they find their membership. Please
keep the ICS office informed as to your patients' reaction to their
membership.
For the profession, we see this as an excellent opportunity to
improve the image of chiropractic. Think of the impact if every DC
in Iowa were to submit just 20 memberships. That would give the ICPA
a membership of nearly 20,000 making it the largest patient
association in the state. Maybe that's unrealistic, but if even a
half or a quarter of the DCs provided 20 memberships that would lead
to some very significant numbers.
You can do your part by photocopying the application and
distributing it to your patients. When completed, simply send them
to the ICS along with the dues check and we'll do the rest.
