OSHA

Question:  What OSHA training is required for a Chiropractic Office?

Response:

OSHA does not have rules which pertain solely to chiropractic offices.  The standards which may be applicable to those offices would also apply to any other businesses which have similar hazards present in their workplaces.  Following is a list of OSHA general industry standards and/or subparts which may be pertinent to your industry: Subpart D Walking Working Surfaces 1910.21-24; Subpart E Exit Routes, Emergency Action Plans & Fire Prevention Plans 1910.33-39; Subpart I Personal Protective Equipment 1910.132; Subpart L Fire Protection 1910.157; Subpart S Electrical 1910.303-305 (especially with regard to grounding equipment, marking electrical disconnects & breakers, and extension cord use);  Subpart Z Hazard Communication 1910.1200 and Bloodborne Pathogens 1910.1030.  These rules are located on OSHA's website www.osha.gov .

Regarding training, the requirements vary depending on the standard, e.g. the bloodborne pathogens standard (1910.1030) requires annual training for employees who have occupational exposure to blood or other potentially infectious material, where as, the hazard communication standard (1910.1200) does not require annual training on chemicals used in the workplace.  There is no requirement for general "OSHA training."

Additionally, only one OSHA standard (1910.120 Hazard Waste Operations and Emergency Response) specifies a minimum number of training hours.  For the most part OSHA training requirements are performance based.  This means that as long as the minimum elements are effectively addressed there are no specific requirements on the time spent on training or how it is accomplished.
