Patient Information Center:   Preventing Back Injuries:  Shoveling Safety

Don’t let “Old Man Winter” cause you unnecessary back pain this season.  Here are some helpful hints for avoiding common winter and snow shoveling related injuries:

  • Dress warm.

  • Wear well-fitting, well-gripping footwear to avoid slips and falls.

  • Use a melting chemical on icy surfaces.

  • When shoveling:

    1. Stretch before you start.  Take several breaks while shoveling, and rest the lower back when you’re finished.

    2. Decrease the weight you are lifting by taking smaller amounts of snow with each scoop.

    3. Avoid rotation! Throw the snow forward and off to the side instead of “over your shoulder.” Do this by facing the same direction to which you are throwing the snow.

    4. Switch sides - do the same amount from the left as from the right.

    5. Keep your back straight.  Rather than bending over at the waist, use your legs and hips to push the shovel forward.

    6. Use a snow blower. (Although struggling with a heavy machine can be equally stressful on the lower back if not used properly.)

    7. If you do experience discomfort, seek treatment quickly for a speedy recovery.

    8. If all else fails, bribe the neighbor’s kid…and if you are the neighbor’s kid, you may want to read the above tips over again.

With a couple of simple precautions, you can help ensure a safe and enjoyable winter season.

These helpful hints are provided to you as a public service of the Iowa Chiropractic Society (ICS).  Demand quality from your chiropractor by choosing an ICS member when seeking chiropractic care.
